Counter stool or bar stool: which height do I need?
Measure your counter. Kitchen islands at about 90 cm need counter stools with a seat height near 65 cm. Bar counters at about 105 cm need bar stools with a seat near 75 cm. Leave 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of the counter.
How many bar stools fit my kitchen island?
Allow 60 cm of counter per stool with a back, or 50 cm for backless stools. A 240 cm island fits four stools comfortably. Leave 15 cm at each end so the outer stools are not squeezed against the edge.
Backless or backed stools?
Backless stools tuck fully under the counter and suit smaller kitchens. Stools with backs are more comfortable for long meals or working at the island. Low-back stools balance both.
How many chairs fit around my table?
Allow 60 cm per standard chair and 65 to 70 cm per armchair. A 180 cm table seats six comfortably, and a 240 cm table seats eight. Check table leg positions too. See our dining tables for sizes by seat count.
What are comfortable dining chair dimensions?
A seat height of 45 to 48 cm suits a standard 75 cm table, leaving 27 to 30 cm for legs. Seat depth of 45 to 50 cm supports the thighs without cutting behind the knees. A slight backward tilt on the backrest helps during long dinners.
Armless or carver dining chairs?
Armless chairs fit more seats and slide fully under the table. Carvers, with arms, are more comfortable for long dinners and often sit at the ends. Check the arm height clears the table apron.
Which upholstery works for dining chairs?
Performance fabric, leather and faux leather handle spills best. Velvet and bouclé look rich but suit adult households. Darker or patterned fabrics hide marks better than pale plain ones.
Do dining chairs have to match the table?
No. Contrast often looks more considered: upholstered chairs around a stone table, or dark frames around light oak. Tie the room together by repeating one finish, such as matching chair legs to a sideboard or the table base.
Are swivel bar stools a good idea?
Yes, where people need to turn toward a living area or get on and off easily. Swivel stools need about 10 cm more space between seats. Choose ones with a return mechanism so they line up neatly when empty.
How do I protect marble or wood floors from chairs?
Fit felt pads to every chair and stool leg and replace them when worn. Under a dining table, a low-pile rug protects the floor and softens noise in large rooms with hard surfaces.
