What size coffee table should I buy?
Aim for about two thirds the length of your sofa, with the top level with or up to 5 cm below the seat cushion. Leave 40 to 50 cm between table and sofa so both legs and hands reach. Round and oval tables suit corner sofas because they keep the walkway clear.
Marble, travertine or wood?
Marble and travertine are heavy, cool to the touch and read as luxury, but need sealing against coffee, wine and citrus. Solid wood feels warmer and is easier to repair. Glass keeps smaller rooms feeling open. Stone tops on metal bases suit contemporary interiors.
Round or rectangular coffee table?
Round tables suit L-shaped and corner sofas, small living rooms and homes with young children, since there are no sharp corners. Rectangular tables suit long straight sofas and larger rooms. Oval tables sit between the two, giving length with softer edges.
What height should a coffee table be?
Standard coffee tables are 40 to 45 cm high. Low lounge sofas pair better with tables of 30 to 38 cm. The rule of thumb: keep the table top level with the seat cushion or slightly below it.
How high should a side table be?
Within 5 cm of the sofa or armchair arm, so a cup rests at hand height. Mixing shapes, such as a round side table beside a rectangular coffee table, keeps the layout from looking flat. Set the whole group on a rug to tie it together.
How many side tables does a living room need?
One at each end of the sofa is typical, but one is enough if a lamp stands on the other side. Every armchair should have a surface within reach, either its own side table or a shared one placed between two chairs.
Is travertine good for a coffee table?
Yes, with care. Travertine is naturally porous, so filled and sealed travertine suits everyday use better than unfilled stone. A honed finish hides small marks better than a polished one. Reseal every 6 to 12 months.
How do I care for a marble table?
Seal it every 6 to 12 months, use coasters under glasses and cups, and wipe spills straight away, especially coffee, wine and citrus. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, never vinegar or bleach. Small etch marks can be professionally polished out.
Are nesting tables practical?
Yes, especially in apartments. A nest of two or three tables gives extra surface when guests arrive and tucks away afterwards. Pick a set where the smaller tops still sit at a usable height from the sofa.
