Chaise longue or chaise lounge: what is the difference?
None. Both names describe a long upholstered seat that supports the legs while you sit upright. Chaise longue is the original French term, meaning long chair. Chaise lounge is the common American spelling. Daybed usually refers to a wider version with a low back or no back.
Where does a chaise longue work best?
Beside a window as a reading spot, in a dressing room, or opposite the sofa in a large living room. In villas with double-height living areas, a chaise fills space without blocking sightlines. Place it on a rug to give it its own zone.
Is a chaise longue comfortable for napping?
Yes, for short rests. A chaise of 60 to 80 cm wide suits one person lying back with the legs supported. For regular sleeping, a daybed from 90 cm wide is more practical. For the same reclined position in the living room, a sofa with a chaise end works well.
Which chaise longue styles are available?
Modern armless chaises with clean lines, curved and sculptural forms, tufted classic designs, Récamier styles with raised ends, and leather recliner lounges. Neutral bouclé and linen suit contemporary interiors, while velvet in deeper tones gives a more classic, luxury feel.
What size chaise longue do I need?
Standard chaise longues are 160 to 190 cm long and 60 to 80 cm wide. Taller users should choose 180 cm or more. Leave at least 60 cm of walkway around the piece, and more in front of a window or wardrobe that needs to open.
Can a chaise longue go in the bedroom?
Yes. At the foot of the bed, choose a chaise no longer than the bed is wide, so it sits within the frame line. In a corner or bay window, angle it toward the light. Keep 75 cm clear between chaise and wardrobe doors.
What does left-facing or right-facing mean?
Stand in front of the chaise, facing it. If the raised back or arm is on your left, it is left-facing. If it is on your right, it is right-facing. Choose the side that lets you face the room or the view when seated.
Which fabric suits a chaise longue?
Velvet gives depth and a formal look, bouclé adds soft texture, and leather suits studies and modern interiors. For a chaise that will see daily use, performance fabric resists stains and wear. Avoid delicate silks in sunny spots.
What lighting works beside a chaise?

How do I care for an upholstered chaise?
Vacuum weekly with a soft brush attachment and blot spills straight away. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun or choose a fade-resistant fabric. Leather needs conditioning every 6 to 12 months in dry, air-conditioned homes.
