Four things: size, frame, cushion fill and upholstery. A hardwood frame, sprung seat base and high-resilience foam cost more upfront, but hold their shape for years where foam-only sofas start to sag. Full-grain leather sits above fabric, and sectionals above straight sofas. Quotes are prepared for each exact configuration.

Modern sofas have clean lines, low backs and slim or hidden legs. Contemporary sofas follow current design, such as curved silhouettes, bouclé and deep cushions. Classic sofas use rolled arms, tufting and turned legs. Many Dubai homes pair a modern sofa with softer shapes, such as a pair of designer armchairs.

An apartment-size three-seater of 180 to 200 cm, or a two-seater, on raised legs with slim arms. Visible floor under the sofa makes the room feel larger, and light upholstery keeps it open. A round coffee table keeps walkways clear in tight layouts.

Villa living rooms of 30 m² and above suit a U-shaped sectional, or two facing three-seaters of 240 cm or more. Keep seating within about 3 m of each other for easy conversation. In very large or double-height rooms, create two seating zones rather than pushing furniture against the walls.

A sectional is a set of fixed pieces joined into an L or U shape. A modular sofa is made of separate units you can rearrange, extend or split across rooms, which suits families who move home. For a lounge corner without a full sectional, a sofa with a chaise end is a lighter option.

Performance fabric handles daily use, children and pets. Full-grain leather copes well with air conditioning if conditioned every 6 to 12 months. Linen blends feel light in warm months but crease. Dark velvet near large windows can fade in strong Gulf sunlight, so place it away from direct afternoon sun.

Check four points. The frame should be kiln-dried hardwood or engineered plywood, joined with dowels and corner blocks rather than staples alone. The seat base should be sprung. Cushion foam should be high-resilience, around 35 kg/m³ or denser. Seams should be straight and double-stitched, with covers that zip off for cleaning.

Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it, extending 20 to 30 cm past each end of the sofa. For a three-seater layout that usually means 200 x 300 cm. Undersized rugs make a living room look smaller.
