Rugs and Carpets, Questions Answered
Sizes, materials and care, for every room and climate.
Rug or carpet: what is the difference?
A rug is a loose floor covering that leaves floor visible around it. Carpet usually means wall-to-wall covering. In the UAE, carpet is also used for large area rugs, so both words appear across our collection.
What size rug for a living room?
Large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to sit on it, extending 20 to 30 cm past each end of the sofa. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm for a three-seater layout and 300 x 400 cm for villa living rooms.
What size rug under a bed?
It should extend 50 to 60 cm past each side of the bed. That means about 200 x 300 cm for a queen and 250 x 300 cm or larger for a king.
What size rug under a dining table?
At least 60 to 75 cm beyond every edge of the dining table, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Low, flat piles work best under dining chairs.
When should I choose a round rug?
Under a round dining table, in a circular entrance hall, or to soften a room full of straight lines. Size it so the whole table and pulled-out chairs sit on it.
Hand-knotted, hand-tufted or machine-made?
Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot, last for decades and cost the most. Hand-tufted rugs are made faster with a tufting gun and offer good value for design-led pieces. Machine-made rugs are the most affordable and consistent. [Confirm which you offer.]
Wool, silk or viscose?
Wool is durable, naturally stain-resistant and suits living rooms. Silk adds sheen and softness but suits low-traffic rooms. Viscose looks like silk at a lower cost but marks easily with water, so avoid it in dining rooms and entrances.
Do I need a rug pad on marble floors?
Yes. A pad stops the rug sliding on polished stone, protects the floor and the rug backing, and adds softness underfoot. Choose one 5 cm smaller than the rug on every side.
How do I keep a rug clean in Dubai?
Vacuum two to three times a week, since fine sand and dust settle into the pile quickly. Rotate the rug every six months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills, never rub, and book a professional clean once a year.
Which rug suits a coffee table area?
A medium or low pile keeps the coffee table level and stable. Very deep shag makes tables wobble and hides small items.
