Bedside Tables, Questions Answered
Heights, widths, storage and styling beside the bed.
Bedside table, nightstand or night table?
They are the same piece. Bedside table is the usual term in the UAE and UK, nightstand in the US, and night table in much of Europe. All describe a small table or cabinet placed beside the bed.
What height should a bedside table be?
Level with the top of your mattress, or within 5 cm of it. That is usually 55 to 70 cm, depending on the bed frame and mattress thickness.
How wide should a bedside table be?
40 to 60 cm suits most beds. Next to a king or super king, 55 to 70 cm keeps proportions balanced. Leave 5 to 10 cm between the table and the wall so the drawer and lamp cable have space.
Drawers or open shelves?
Drawers hide chargers, books and medication, which keeps the room calm. Open shelves suit guest rooms and styled displays. A single drawer with an open shelf below is a practical middle ground.
Do both bedside tables need to match?
No. A matching pair gives symmetry in a master bedroom. Different pieces of similar height feel more collected and work in asymmetric rooms. Keep the heights close so the lamps line up.
Are floating bedside tables practical?
Yes, especially in smaller bedrooms. Wall-hung tables free up floor space and make cleaning easier. They need fixing into solid wall or suitable anchors, and a drawer for storage since there is no lower shelf.
Which bedside table suits a small bedroom?
A slim table of 35 to 40 cm wide, a round pedestal table, or a wall-hung shelf. Pale finishes and raised legs keep the space feeling open.
Which materials work for bedside tables?
Wood and lacquer are practical for daily use. Marble tops look luxurious but need coasters and sealing. Leather-wrapped and upholstered tables add softness and suit hotel-style bedrooms.
What lamp suits a bedside table?
One whose shade bottom sits at about shoulder height when you sit up in bed, usually 60 to 75 cm tall overall. The base should take up no more than a third of the table top. Browse our table lamps and wall lights.
